Guide to Counting Window Panes

How to Count Your Window Panes for a Fast and Accurate Quote

At Omaha Window Washing, we base our pricing on the number of window panes—so knowing how to count them accurately helps us give you a quick and fair quote. If you’ve never counted panes before, don’t worry—it’s simpler than it sounds. Here's everything you need to know.

🪟 What Is a Window Pane?

A window pane is each individual piece of glass separated by framing. A single window unit may contain several panes depending on the style.

For example:

  • A window with one large piece of glass = 1 pane

  • A window divided into four smaller sections = 4 panes

Think of each framed piece of glass as one pane, whether it opens or not.

🔍 Common Window Types and How to Count Them

Below is how to count some common styles found in Omaha homes. One note we would like to make though, is for windows or houses with an excessive number of “grid” style windows, we will custom quote these because those little individual panes of glass would add up quick!

Single or Double Hung Windows

These usually slide up and down and have two panes—one on top, one on bottom.

Casement Windows

These swing open like a door and typically have one pane, unless divided by decorative grids.

Sliding Windows

Slide side to side and usually have two large panes.

Picture or Fixed Windows

Non-opening large windows—usually one pane, but check for grid divisions.

Bay or Bow Windows

Often made up of 3 to 5 separate sections—count the panes in each section.

French Doors

Each framed piece of glass counts—so a door with 10 small panes on each side = 20 panes total.

Again, for windows or houses with an excessive number of “grid” style windows, we will custom quote these because those little individual panes of glass add up fast!

Storm Windows & Doors

If you want these cleaned too, count each visible piece of glass.

Don’t worry about getting it perfect. Give us your best estimate, and we’ll confirm everything when we arrive. If you’re not sure how to count a particular window, snap a photo and send it with your request—we’re happy to help.
